| Military: | William was attested into the military on 22 April 1912 at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk - joined at Woolwich, a driver in the Army Service Corps. He transferred to the 4th Hussars of the Line on 15 July 1912. On 16 April 1913 he was dismissed for misconduct.He enlisted at Norwich on 27 November 1914 - Norfolk Regiment, Private 16895, and served on home soil until 22.06.1915. From 23 June 1915 he served in France with the B.E.F. On 16.07.1917 he received a gun shot wound to the right foot and returned to the U.K. Initially he was at the 3rd Western General Hospital in Cardiff recovering from his wound. From 8 May 1918 he returned to France, rejoining his Regiment. On 11 September 1918 he was thought to be missing in the field and his next of kin notified, but later was found to be a PoW and his wife was informed on 12.11.1918 with the news. On 22 November 1918 he was repatriated after release from the PoW camp, returning to Hull aboard the S.S. Porto (name unsure), and served on home soil until demobilization and transfer to Class “Z” Army Reserve on 10 Mar 1919. |
